It was actually an inconsistency in what the character set encoding was
set to. Fixing this makes the status line show the measured distance
and also fixes problems with empty menu items where accented characters
would be which I also noticed when tracking this down.
There's still a problem rendering accented characters in the labels for
the compass, clino, etc, but that has a different cause.
