OK, I've done the alterations, and everything seems to work. Because the
version of survex I'm working on is already patched for 3dx output, I've =
had
to create a patch with the 3dx mods and output control combined. The new
options would be...

-x --use-new-format output in 3dx format.
-q --quiet only display the general summary
                                             and error messages =20
-m --mute=09 only display error messages=20
-s --suppress-aux=09 only produce 3d/3dx file=20
                                             (no pos,inf,err files)

You can get the patch from the Chasm homepage at
http://members.xoom.com/bighairyone/chasm/survex-0.93.diff

If you really, really don't want to install the 3dx stuff, (but you know
you want to really...)
you could try patching using the "top-up" patch at the
bottom of the Chasm page (under Goodies). It should work with a bit of
bodging, with the exception of two bits, which are near some of the 3dx
changes, so patch __may__ not be happy. Also some of the line numbers wil=
l
be wrong. Good luck.

Well, my 3dx file format already has error information in it,
almost all the inf stuff can be easily calculated (there'll be a "cave
statistics" option on the next release of chasm), and the pos stuff must
be included anyway. The only thing that's missing is the node-counts and=20
number of loops.=20
