I'm pretty sure it does already (although it's very hard to get
Windows to actually show me). The 'type' column says 'SVX File', and I
didn't create this file new, it came out of an existing dataset.

Good idea, but as it's not a new file I don't think that's it.

No. I get exactly the same (short) filename shown in there as I do in
folder views. And anyway I want to change the default folder view not
have to right-click->properties, just to find out what a file is called!
I do get the real filename under the 'details' tab. And it does indeed
have a .svx extension.
