Sometime before sending, Olly Betts typed (and on Thursday 2011-11-17 sent):

There's nothing to stop you having a window bigger than the
display, but will the software render to the whole window
if it is not visible ? Eventually, though, you hit the X-window
canvas limit of 32768x32768 which comes as a real pain (I have
software whose display just goes uniform grey when it gets to
this limit )-:
