Maybe this is a faster way ? 

(c) install the same OS as the server on a VM and build the tools there,
then copy across. This lets you have root on a machine with the same
versions of everything, and with things installed that you might not
want on the server. The same solution then works (provided you keep the
VM in step with server updates) for similar things in the future.

Does need a machine with the same hardware architecture as the server
(or one which will run a VM simulating the same hardware...) and a
copy of Debian lenny (of the right bit-width) to install.
