Whilst posting that link probably helps the chap who asked, it does't
do a great deal to help people who wade through a list of software in
something like adept_manager and see survex, then just install from the
Ubuntu or Debian repository. A more obvious link from the man page or a
README inside the stuff you just installed would indeed probably help
people new to the software who haven't come via the survex download site,
and/or aren't installing the software because they are joining a team
who already have a load of data in survex format.
Maybe some links to sites that tell you how to go about surveying caves
would be useful too ? Nowadays I mostly use caverot to visualise canoe
and kayak designs, but one presumes that most people reading the description
of survex and aven in a repository have at least some desire to know about
cave surveying ...
