It's not just the degree symbol - any non-ASCII character in a status
bar readout makes that readout disappear, at least with certain setups.
I think this triggers if you're using a UTF-8 locale.

Some people use "grad", where there are 100 grad in a right angle.  Aven
supports this too (try toggling "Controls->Degrees").

But that doesn't fix the underlying problem, so anyone using Survex in
a language where one of the status bar messages contains a non-ASCII
character will suffer from missing status bar messages (for example, in
German you don't see the altitude of the mouse pointer in elevation
mode).  It would be much better to find out why this happens.
