I suspect this is a font or locale problem as the missing message uses a
degree sign which is in iso-8859-1, but not in ASCII - either the font
is missing a degree sign or Gtk thinks it's using ASCII.  Gtk seems to
have a habit of ignoring strings it can't fully display...

Not sure what the solution is.  I'll look into it.
