>From the point of view of a non-programmer user there are, in effect, two
parts to using any survey program: data input and survey manipulation and
export.

As far as data input is concerned, one of the great joys of Survex is it's
high degree of flexibility. This is particularly important to users like me
who deal with data collected by a wide variety of cavers over a long period
of time. (I am currently entering data for an Irish cave which was collected
between 1953 and 1985). While it is true that entering data into something
other than a text file might be quicker, Survex is far and away superior
when it comes to closely following the original paper format(s).

As an aside, the way in which Survex is structured, using nested files and
the "equate" command, is also extremely useful when dealing with this sort
of data. Please do not change this!

However, when viewing processed data on the screen and when exporting to
other file formats or print, a GUI is much more user-friendly and flexible
and I hope that it will be in these areas that Survex will develop in the
future.
