You are right Luc, 

but any binary format means you may do only and only what author(s) implemented into that program.

With text format one may do strange things, on his own risk, of course.

And, what is much more important plain text format is possible to interpret from hand drawing on paper, script in Illustrator or Inkscape, … or an other program.
