extend problem in 1.1.7

Hi all

Trying to alter some of my extended elevations

Inserting the command 
*start 42 
gives an error 
.....Unknown command `start'

Also tried
*eswap 45 which gives similar error

I am using the commands inside the svx file between the *begin and *end, is
this correct.

I am on a Windows 2000 box
