  And my demo code is not complete...

  Picky point:  There are lots of engines that compute full 3D weights
  from the full covariance matrix.    *BUT* there aren't many that are
  non-commercial, and therefore there are not many publicly availiable.

  There are also any number of books (for surveyors) that cover the 
  subject in almost painfull detail.   I have some bibliography at:

  The one I've found clearest is "Analysis and Adjustment of Survey
  Measurements" by Mikhail and Gracie.
