<p data-start="117" data-end="315">I tried to load a <code data-start="135" data-end="141">.bil</code> file using the UTM 34N coordinate system. That might have been the issue. I thought it would work, but I kept getting the error:<br data-start="270" data-end="273">

It seems to<br>answer most of your questions.<br><br>Currently only BIL or HGT formats are supported, and only in WGS84<br>lat/long (EPSG:4326 to be precise). We now link to GDAL so we could<br>use that to load other terrain data formats, but it looks like updating<br>to support it is more work than one might expect.<br><br>If you want something to test with that's known to work, I'd suggest<br>downloading the appropriate tile from the "Viewfinder Panoramas" site<br>linked from the page above.<br><br>GDAL can convert other DEM/DTM formats to BIL (see the gdal_translate<br>tool).<br><br>You'll need to give more detail than "cannot load the surface" for us<br>to help work out what's going wrong.
